Bringing Magic, Music, & Movement Together

Held in-person at The Peacemaker Studio and online via Zoom.

Dive Into the Rhythmic Heart of Raqs Sharqi

Finger cymbals—also known as zills or sagat—are an iconic part of Middle Eastern dance. They’re more than just percussion: they connect movement and music in a way that electrifies audiences and deepens your artistry.

In this immersive 3-hour workshop, you'll learn to dance with finger cymbals in a way that feels musical, expressive, and full of joy. Whether you’re a beginner or ready to refine your sound, this is your chance to explore the essential rhythms of Arabic music and the magic of playing them with your own hands.

What You’ll Learn

This workshop is a balanced blend of lecture, technique, and dancing. You’ll gain tools that help you hear the music more clearly, play confidently, and move with precision and presence.

We'll cover the following rhythms and explore how to accompany each with cymbals:

  • Malfuf

  • Masmoudi Saghir (aka Baladi)

  • Chiftitelli

  • Maqsoum

  • Saidi

You'll also get coaching on:

  • Finger cymbal technique & tone

  • Timing and musical awareness

  • How to enhance—not overpower—the music

  • Creative ways to improvise and perform with confidence

Why Finger Cymbals Matter

Dancing with zills adds a layer of magic to your performance. The audience lights up—it's like watching the music come to life. But many dancers hesitate to begin because it feels intimidating or confusing.

I’m here to coach you through it. I’ve taught this workshop for years, and I know how to make finger cymbals feel empowering and accessible. You'll leave this session feeling inspired, confident, and equipped to bring rhythm into your dance like never before.

Who This Is For?

This workshop is open to all levels. If you're new to cymbals, this is a safe space to begin. If you’ve played before, you’ll deepen your skill and creativity. All dancers welcome.
