Ignite Your Passion

6 benefits of learning how to choreograph

  1. Personal Growth and Self-Confidence: Choreography offers a foundation for personal growth and self-discovery. As you explore your creativity and push your boundaries, you'll gain a deeper understanding of yourself as a dancer and as an artist. This process builds self-confidence, as you witness your ideas come to life and discover your unique artistic expression. If you are working in a group choreography, this process builds connection through teamwork and communication.

  2. Enhanced Memory and Cognitive Skills: Creating dance sequences at any level requires mental agility, memorization, and spatial awareness. No matter the age, through choreography you'll strengthen memory skills, improve your ability to recall complex movement patterns, and enhance your overall cognitive abilities. This mental stimulation can have a positive impact on other areas of your life today and in the far future!

  3. Enhanced Body Awareness: Choreography requires a deep understanding of body movement and spatial awareness. As you develop your choreographic skills, you'll become more attuned to the subtleties of your own body, gaining better control, coordination and getting to know how it likes to express - in other words, what feels good to you. This heightened body awareness can be applied not only to dance but also to everyday activities. I wouldn’t be surprised if you start to see more grace and fluidity in your daily actions and responses!

  4. Improved Musicality: Arabic music can be VERY rich and has deep historical roots! Don’t let that intimidate you. By deepening your understanding of Arabic music, you will not only enrich your choreography, but your storytelling and appreciation of the art itself. As you create dance sequences, you'll develop a stronger sense of rhythm, musical phrasing, and more.

  5. Performance and Presentation Skills: I often get asked about Stage Presence - it’s a skill that’s we’ll always be building. We got through many phases in life, and it is important to begin with asking ourselves who we are as individuals. Learning how to captivate an audience and deliver compelling storytelling can be a lot to handle. However, having a deeper understanding of our intentions and practicing the above points, this skill becomes MUCH easier to handle! In my course I will be helping you practice your stage presence in a safe and fun environment - together with your dance sisters.

In addition, the culmination of these skills can overflow into other areas of your life, such as public speaking, presentations, and building self-worth.

  6. Emotional Release and Stress Relief: The process of learning how to choreograph allows a deeper dive in learning how to channel your emotions into your movements, and sometimes even serves as a cathartic experience! Dancing has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood, and increase overall well-being, providing a holistic benefit to your mental and emotional health.

Overall, learning how to choreograph is a creative exploration that provides us with artistic freedom - and that feels DAMN GOOD! We are all creative beings! Sometimes, we just don’t see it - but I believe it is in ALL of us! Choreographing your own dance routines gives you the freedom to shape your movements according to your personal experiences, personality and vision. It opens many doors that perhaps you thought were not there or even possible. It’s a challenge worth taking.

Exploring Four Styles of Belly Dance:

  1. Folklore: We will begin the journey with Egyptian and Lebanese roots! In general, folkloric dances from the various Middle Eastern and North African regions, tell a story and represent the customs and traditions of its respective community. By exploring folklore styles, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultural tapestry that makes belly dance so captivating.

  2. Classical: Embody elegance and grace and learn about the timeless beauty of the classical style. Rooted in the rich traditions of Middle Eastern music and poetry, this style is known for its intricate movements and musicality. We will learn a mini-choreography to one of the most well-known songs, Enta Omri, originally sung by the Egyptian legend, Oum Kalthoum.

  3. Fusion: Fusion belly dance combines elements from different dance genres, including contemporary, latin, hip hop, flamenco, and more. It offers a modern twist to traditional belly dance, allowing for creative experimentation. Fusion style will expand your horizons and encourage you to think outside the box.

  4. Pop: Infuse traditional belly dance with energetic pop music and dynamic movements for a vibrant and modern style. Learn about what music is POP-ular in the Arab world today. Arabic pop music is sometimes influenced by western dynamics such as hip hop and rap, as well as other cultures from around the world. There are many styles within this genre, such as Shaabi and Mahraganat, and it’s continuously changing and growing. It’s an interesting way to explore the intersection between tradition and contemporary trends.
